The Origin of Wool Felt
Apr 30,2024

Woolen felt is an ancient and long-lasting fabric, and its manufacturing method has been widely spread since the ancient Roman era. It is a well-known craft skill in Europe.
There are many legends about the origin of woolen felt, among which the most interesting one is about the patron saint Clement of Western shoe and hat merchants. Once, Saint Clement ran desperately in the forest to avoid enemy pursuit. His feet began to heat and ache, but he still managed to get rid of the relentless pursuit of the enemy. So he discovered some wool in the forest and stopped to collect it. To alleviate the pain, he wrapped the collected wool around his feet, then put them back into his shoes and continued to run. When he finally arrived at a safe place, he took out his sore feet from his shoes and found that they had turned into a pair of felt shoes. From then on, woolen felt was widely used in religious rituals and became a deity that drove away demons and brought good luck.
Later on, it was discovered that wool had high-quality properties such as non weaving, integrated formability, warmth retention, waterproofing, flame resistance, color fixation, and thermal insulation. Wool was first used as a manufacturing material for advanced handicrafts, and then wool felt handicrafts were elevated to the forefront of art.
